What causes gummy lines and smiles?

There are a number of factors that cause gummy lines and gummy smiles with problems including teeth, lips and the gum tissue itself.  Your upper lip plays a big part in the appearance of your smile; the average lip moves 6-8 millimeters when smiling, so when hyper-mobility occurs, the lip may rise too much, revealing more gum tissue.  A short upper lip can also have this revealing effect that results in a smile overtaken by gum tissue.  Other common causes of gummy smiles are where teeth are small in comparison to the gums due to genetics or wear and gums that may be too enlarged.
